INFERTILITY INTRODUCTION

‘Infertility’ is the inability to conceive despite a year of unprotected, regular sexual intercourse in an effort to conceive a child. Approximately 15-20% of married couples experience infertility problems.

Today, evaluation of infertile couples requires teamwork. This team should include gynecologists and obstetricians who are competent in infertility, an experienced urologist, embryologist and geneticist.

Causes of infertility are examined in 3 main groups:

  1. Female factors
  2. Male factors
  3. Unexplained infertility

The prevelance of the causes of infertility is as follows:

  • Female factors 30%
  • Male factors 30%
  • Coexistence of causes related to both sexes 30%
  • Unexplained reasons 10%
